Growing Onions from Garbage

Hello

In my garden this winter I just have about 75 Garlic cloves over winter. Also, I have a compost pile. We've been having some nice weather here so I decided to go out and turn the compost. The pile consists of grass, chopped leaves and many kitchen scraps. As I was turning the pile, I found what appeared to be the chopped-off (bottom) end of an old onion that had sprouted. Knowing that Garlic are hardy and will survive over winter, I decided to plant the Onion.

Will Onions indeed survive over winter like their Allium cousins the Garlic? Also, what might I expect from such a sprout? I've read that Onions grown from seed take 2 years to produce a large bulb. Will I need to let this Onion grow for 2 seasons or what? Finally, I planted the Onion sprout just like the Garlic.. about 3" down, covered with mulch. Anything else special I need to do to care for an Onion?

Thanx
