Growing Shallots from Seed

I've never grown them from seed before. Typically it doesn't warm up here enough to plant out the tomatoes until around May. I'm not sure when the shallots would go out, but I'm assuming the ground doesn't have to be quite as warm as with the tomatoes. So when should I start the seeds indoors? Thanks.

My folks aren't too far away from you, down in Rensselaerville, and grew shallot from seed last year. They were quite happy with the results. I think Mom started them at the same time as her onion seeds. They are out shopping (probably up in Albany) so I'll see if I can't get a more specific date in case you don't start your own onions. Cheers!

Ok, she says start them mid March. If you are down off the plateau and in the river valley, you might have a week or two head start on them, though. Then look to put them out 4-6 weeks later. Cheers!

No, I don't grow onions, unfortunately I'm a city gardener with *very* little room (only room for 2 raised beds) so I have to be very picky about what I plant. Thank you for the response; I appreciate it.

This is my first time trying to grow shallots from seeds. I am starting them indoor. How long should it take before they begin to sprout?
