when i 1st got into growing onions i started with sets and stuttgarter was the yellow onion. sets are quite limited for variety. sets stink! i never had much luck wth sets and sg was no exception. stick with seeds or at worst plants. if only sets were avavilable i'd stop growing onions.

During my first 70 years of gardening I only knew about onion sets as that was what folks used in Southern Indiana. I always assumed the onion sets in the stores were Stuttgarter or Ebenezer. In my 71st year of gardening I have planted Ebenezer seeds direct. I did that the first week of March by preparing the bed in the fall and covering with 1.5 inches of tree chips to prevent winter annual weeds. To plant, I used the corner of the hoe to make a v-shaped trench down to the soil and planted about 15 seeds per foot of trench. I covered with sterile medium about 1/4 inch deep. We had 2 days of 70F sun this week.

For the last 82 years I have been using onion sets and I have to say they have alway produced a yielding crop of very tasty onions we have so many, we give them away to many of friends and family, I would highly recommend using sets as they are easy to plant out and you don't have all the fuss with small seeds my eye site is not so good theses days, so the sets make my gardening much easier.
