Storing harvested onions in Carolina heat

Hi All,

I posted this question on Carolina Gardening as well hoping for ideas.

I live in central North Carolina with a crawl space under my house that's about 4 feet high in the the tallest area. I had planned to store my dried/cured onion harvest there then realized it probably won't be cool enough for the summer. Although, to be honest, I'm not really sure.

The heat here really gets blistering. Anyone out there in a hot environment have ideas for storing onions where there's no basement, and no room in the refrigerator or freezer?

Next question, I am reading that some folks hang the onions to dry while others leave them on top of the dirt after digging them up. Which way is best? I would have to move mine to the shade but still wonder if leaving them on the ground is really okay.

Thank you for your help!

Erin
