Anyone transplant bunching onions?

Posted by naturemitch 4/5 WI (My Page) on

Hi,

Just curious if anyone transplants bunching onions. I have grown onions from seed before and start these early to be transplanted out. Last year I tried direct seeding some bunching onions...and they did horribly. So is there any reason I couldn't start the bunching onions indoors...to be transplanted out as well? I have evergreen long white, oasis and a deep purple.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

thanks
m

2 years ago I winter-sowed some multiplying onion seeds in an old meat tray about an inch deep with soil. I just sprinkled them on top and tamped them down with my hand. They came up and then in the early spring I transplanted them into the garden intermingling them with catawissa onion sets. They are still out there and still multiply. They were really easy to grow.

I direct seeded them in the garden some years back and each spring dig up a few clumps and line them out in a new spot.
