Darned Deer

So last fall I planted potato onions in a bed in the front yard because that was the open ground when the sets came. I didn't even consider that the bed was between the apple tree that the deer love to browse on during the fall, and the flowering kale that the deer eat to the ground during winter.

Yesterday I was out with my son, checking for garlic, shallots, and onions coming up, and discovered deep poky deer hoofprints in that onion bed, and no sign of green. (The garlic and shallots in the back yard are coming up nicely, thank you.) Maybe it is just too early for the onions, this is my first year with them so I'm just not sure. But being stomped on by sharp deer hooves can't have helped matters!

Almost makes me wish the cougar was still patrolling the neighborhood, like it was when I bought my house 20 years ago. The coyotes just don't keep the deer in check like ma cougar did!
