Leeks rotting in the field

Last year I planted "Tadorna" and "Sheriff" leeks in May after growing them in flats for 1.5 months. They did well in the amended soil and I fed them judicious amounts of fish emulsion. Many (perhaps a third) of the roots had split and rotted even though we have a drip irrigation on a timer. Is this normal? Should I have expected more leeks to be sound?
