brownish garlic cloves

I know it's the wrong time of year to plant garlic, but I still have a question. :-)

I often find brownish cloves on my otherwise white store-bought garlic. I usually throw them away instead of cooking with them. I don't know if they are bad or not, so I haven't taken chances. But would they grow? They aren't "rotten" and soft, just brownish. If they'll grow I may stick some in my garden just to see what happens.

I suspect they're either over the hill or diseased.

I wouldn't put anything suspect into my garden. Just doesn't sound wise.

I wouldn't think diseased. They are nice, firm cloves, just not the pure, creamy white you expect. I get this in nearly every clove of garlic. Some will be white, a few turned this color. Perhaps I have the terminology wrong...the entire bulb isn't brownish, just a few sections of it.

Doesn't anyone know what causes this and if they are still good?

If you want to plant good quality garlic buy it at your local farmers market.Its already climatized and you know its name and who grew it.Most store junk is from China and one is playing roulette with a single shot gun when you eat anything "GROWN" in China.Buy in Sept. and plant in Oct.
