Asessing garlic winter damage

I uncovered my garlic mulch and found that my German porcelain is clearly fine, but the softneck, which had grown ~8" last fall before cold stopped it, has lost its leaves down to approx 1"-2" from the main stem. It looks like the main stem is OK but the leaves are just stubs.

I'm trying to decide whether to just pull it up and allocate the space to something else, or whether to let it grow. Any advice on how to make that decision would be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

Let it stay. Garlic is amazingly resilient and you'll know within the next 2-3 weeks if it intends on sprouting new leaves.

I agree, let it stay in the ground. Unless there is no sprout at all you will get some type of bulb.

On a side note, I know most places recommend Soft neck for us Southern Gardeners, I am in Raleigh. I get much better results from my hard neck varieties year after year.

Softneck garlic died - not a single plant made it. However, each and every plant of German porcelain is fine and growing great. Live and learn.
