Garlic Question - lower leaves brownish

Posted by blue_ivy 7 (Central NC) (My Page) on

Hi,

This is my first attempt at growing garlic (or anything, really). It has been growing fine so far: healthy, green & tall since first sprouting toward the end of winter. I noticed just this weekend that the lower, outermost leaves on several of my babies are getting brownish-yellow and wilting a bit. They have been getting rain or water about once a week (this amount is arbitrary - I don't know what is ideal), and I don't think there is any bug/ pest problem. They are in almost full sun. Any idea what could be going on? (For all I know it might be normal.)

Thanks for any help!!

I am in NC too, Because we get some winter growth it could be cold damage. The lower leaves were the first out of the ground and could have been frost bit by our cold spells this winter. It is probably nothing to worry about.

I concur with Garlic Lady's prognosis. I've been growing garlic here in the Piedmont for several years (though I am on a microscopic-scale compared to Garlic Lady :^) ), and I always get some "winter burn" because the garlic grows so well in the fall before the hard freezes kick in.

Right now, every single one of my garlic (3 varieties, about 60-70 plants in all) has brown tips and/or dead side leaves. I worry not!

Oh, and as far as watering, I wouldn't do it more than once a week (and only if you haven't gotten any rain)(which we have, so far)(yey!).

Cheers!

P.S. Maybe we will meet up at one of the NC plant/ seed swaps, who knows?
