Often shallots are sold in clumps. The clumps of bulbs is what happens when you plant a single bulb. They "multiply"! So, when they tell you to remove a "clove, I'm guessing they mean a bulb from the clump of bulbs.

It always amazed me how prolific our shallots were. We pull the clump, take every onion for the house except 1 shallot. Then, we replant that 1 bulb back into the garden. Some folks trim the roots sorta short before replanting. Maybe I should try trimming them.

We have green shallots year round. I've never needed to store them. We just pull what we need when we need them. I enjoy the green portion of the plant as much as the bulb. Can't imagine having ONLY the bulb to enjoy.

We don't have much of a winter down here so, I haven't a clue how our method would work in beautiful New Mexico.

There are multiplying onions that the bulb is segmented like a very tight garlic. I have never grown these but, I imagine you pry them apart and plant each clove separately.

Yep - My shallots are usually 2 "bulbs" grown tightly together. Sometimes there are 3. You will have to peel back the wrapper and check.

I grow Red Holland. Harvest late summer and replant cloves in October... they are coming up already in zone 4. :-)

Thank you for the help. The Red Holland it was easy to find what to separate, I am guessing that most of the Dutch yellow do not have cloves. I pried into some and really did not see any cloves, loved the smell though. I will try planting them whole and see what happens. If it does work, I will try the replanting of one bulb when harvesting. Do you replant in the same spot or rotate it around? Being in the mountains, I do have winter but I have planted shallots in the fall before and they did well. Next fall, I hope to try the grey shallots too.
