Am I doing this right?

Today I bought just one onion set, called "vidalia sweet" onions, to try my hand at growing. I live in Central Kansas. I read a little about growing them on some different sites and read that they tolerate different soils well and just need watering and like fertilizer. I'm going to plant the 4" apart in rows, in my back yard.

I am wanting to know how long it will take them before they are ready... my grandma said she has grown onions before and that they only take about 3 or 4 weeks. I know that I should wait until the tops dry out. As of now my only experience with growing veggies is with potatoes so that should give you an idea of my knowledge on the subject. Also, should I plant them with the little bulbs just below the surface, or several inches deep, or what?

Anything I should keep in mind? This is just something I'm doing in my spare time so I'm not going to be too upset if I ruin them. Thanks for your help!
