Transplanting garlic plants

Hi!

I am new to gardening and came across actual garlic plants when I was buying strawberry plants. I hadn't even thought about garlic until I saw these so I didn't research at all before buying one. When I got home I tried to determine how I would transplant it and after reading a great deal I can't find anything about garlic plants, only starting from cloves in the fall.

There are three plants in a small 3"x3" container and it seems to be very crowded to me. The leaves are about 18" tall and are beginning to fall over. Is it possible to transplant these into a larger container and if so how would I go about that? Would a 3 gallon pot be big enough for all three plants? Sorry about the lack of gardening knowledge!

Thank you :)

A 3" pot isn't big enough for 3 garlic plants, unless one is growing it for the greens to use for cooking, etc. When transplanting, it's best if you can keep the soil together. If you can't keep the soil together, shake the loose soil off of the roots and trim the roots to about 1/2 to 1 inch long before transplanting.

Good luck.

A week ago, I transplanted a bunch of garlic plants in my garden that were overcrowded, now they seem to be doing OK. To damage roots as little as possible,, watered soil around plants until it was mud, then just lifted them out, long roots (3 to 5 inches) came out nicely. Did not try trimming roots. Good luck!
