What the heck is a tater onion?

I had no idea this forum existed on GW until I started trying to find out what a tater onion is. Maybe someone here can help me.

A few weeks ago I gave an elderly gardener a couple of heirloom tomato plants. A few days later she sent me a pot with three onion plants in it with a note saying that it was tater onion, which she grows every year from seed and that it is not widely grown anymore.

I did an internet search and found a person selling them, but they don't do much to inform the purchaser.

Does anyone here know the species, habit, uses, for this plant? Do I want to eat it, grow it in the flower garden, save seeds from it, perpetuate it, share it? Is this a common plant disguised with an unusual name?

I would be grateful for any input!
