Should I trim the roots on my onions before planting?

My fabulous batch of from-seed Walla-Wallas are ready to go in the ground. Thanks to whoever recommended that great method of separating them. The roots are three or so inches long. Seems like it would be a pain to try and plant them that way. Should I trim the roots to make planting easier? Would that stress them unduly?
