 o
identifying garlic???

Posted by flutesee 6 (My Page) on

Ok, so when I planted my garlic cloves last year, I temporarily lost my mind and didn't mark any of them. I know I planted Music, Chesnok Red, Spanish Roja, and German White. I have only grown the Music before, so I'm not familiar with the physical characteristics of the others. Does anyone have any ideas for how to identify them when I pull them in July? They're not even close to being ready, as I haven't seen evidence of any scapes, and probably won't for a few weeks. I think I had scapes around Father's Day last year. Any ideas would be a help; I would hate to have to stick these in as unnamed stock for next year's crop.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris

I'm sure somebody on here will harvest before you and may have the same variety you have. I assume you planted the different varietys in rows. If nobody else pipes up I can tell the difference between Roja and Chesnok pretty easily. I'll look at my plants tomorrow and see if there is a drastic difference, I can take pictures of the different plants...maybe you can figure it out from that.

Thanks so much. I've been checking my plants and there's no noticeable difference between them, other than the size of some of them.

oh you must create a map when planting!

I'll take a stab at this. And all my comments are based upon what I have experienced. For example I have seen music bulbs that are small mine are huge.

Music has very large bulbs and cloves, flavor is mild, white wrapper. I think spanish roja is HOT and may have a reddish wrapper. Chesnok red would have red wrapper? German white are a bit smaller than music, white wrapper.

oh i have noticed that my music plants are much larger than any other variety i grow.

Guys, thanks so much for the help! Nick, those pictures were great and Tom, I think I've identified my Music plants, as they too, are much larger than the others. I have a couple of really small plants that are not showing any signs of scapes yet, and one of them has fallen over. There's another thread going about this, and there are others who are having the same issues, so I don't feel like I did something wrong. I'm sure they'll come out fine when it's time to harvest.
