Leeks

My leeks look good but the leaves are not very big. Will they get larger like the ones you purchase in the grocery stores? Do you keep piling the dirt up on them so the white will be longer?
Thanks,
sheryl

RE: Leeks

I grew them last year from live plant sets (King Richard) and they got pretty big - I picked them in October. They weren't gargantuan like some of the ones you buy in the stores, but they were at least 1/2" across, and several were 1" across. Of course it depends on the variety you planted, whether you started them from seed or from sets (sets get bigger faster, because they've had the headstart).

If you plant them in deeper holes you don't have to pile up the dirt, but I think that will help to blanch them out if you didn't plant them deep. Personally I don't mind the green, but that could be a symptom of laziness. :D
