onion or garlic?

For over 25 yr. I have had these growing under the rose bushes, apparantly to stop aphids & bugs on roses. They have a flat leaf, and get about 4 and 1/2 ft. tall. They bloom in fall, a large white flower, which lasts thru the winter. They smell just like garlic. They multiply by baby bulbs around the mother bulb, quite fast I should say. It seems the more I pull up, the more comes up the next yr. Have not ate any as we do not know what they are. Have looked online, at onion & garlic sites, but none look like it. Think I tossed out 50 so far, into the city garbage, not the compost! They would love it there. I don't have a camera, ran over it with my wheelchair, so decided not to replace it. Anyone have any ideas?
