As I understand it, if you replant large bulbs, they will divide just as the ones you received did. Sometimes when you replant small bulbs they just produce a large bulb. But as you found, sometimes they divide, too.

And yes, I think you plant about the same time you would be planting garlic and shallots, in the fall.

Thank you Catherine! I have since tried some of these onions - what a fabulous flavor! I definitely want to make sure they reproduce well. I hope they keep well.

I lost almost all of mine last winter. I ran out of time to plant in the ground, so I put them in the big planters that I usually use for tomatoes and peppers during the summer. Any other winter that would have worked, but this winter was exceptionally dry, which probably stressed them, and we had a two week cold snap that froze all but one onion plant in the un-insulated pots. So I won't be eating any of my remaining potato onions this year, they all have to be replanted to bring the numbers up. Funny, though, the shallots are supposed to be more tender than potato onions, but I have a bumper crop of those. I guess that's the difference between being in the ground and in a pot when the weather is extreme.
