*harvest Garlic now ?

The hardneck garlic that I planted in my Zone 6 garden last garden I think is ready to harvest.

By convention I usually wait until around the 2nd week of July to harvest, but, we have had BRUTAL hot weather for over one solid week -- temps ALWAYS in the mid 90s -- here in deep southern Illinois and my garlic plants have almost all of their leaves turning brown, and the whole plants themselves are starting to droop and bend over....

**We do have a ton of rain scheduled to move into the area tomorrow, so..........should I go ahead and harvest today, before the rain hits ?

Also, as a related question. What would happen if I left the garlic in the ground too long -- would the now fully formed bulbs get bigger, or, would they swell to the point that the papery wrapper would start to split exposing the juicy part of the individual cloves to the soil and moisture which is not good.

Many thanks.
