Kevin, waiting a bit too long to harvest, you get exactly as you described, split wrappers, exposed cloves, shorter shelf-life. I'd probably harvest before the rain and try to cure them in a dry place as normal.

I harvested much of my garlic yesterday. Last year I harvested in July so I was surprised to see several plants of an unknown variety that appeared ready. A few of the wrapper's had split but most were ok.

We were having a nice cool spring and then awoke one morning the end of May and it felt more like August. Sticky!

My softneck garlic is in a raised bed. We have had reports of up to 10 inches of rain the last few days here in Central PA. About one third to half of the garlic tops have browned and most of the plants are bent over. Should I pull now or wait to dry out some, both ground and bulbs?

Get them up before the rain. Getting softnercks up early is a good thing because it gives you better necks to braid and more skins to help storage because when all the other garlic is gone you want to be able to eat on the long storing softnecks till the next garlic harvest.

I am in 5b so when will it be my time to pull my garlic up?
The leaves are still rather but not totally green right now.

Halfmoon NY - I started to check my crop in late June, and found some root rot. It is most likely due to an extremely wet season. My soil is medium to heavy but drains fairly well if the rains are intermitent. I decided to harvest early this year, and presently have 95% of my crop hanging. It was a pretty good crop, but approx. 10% had some root rot. I usually harvest in late July, so it will be interesting to see how my crop stores. I have noticed some green forming around the bulbs I picked a week ago. The plants were probably trying to continue growth. Hopefully this will be ok. Any comments would be appreciated.
