Planting Garlic in September?

Posted by tsa47 5B (My Page) on

I am in zone 5B.

For the pass few years, I always harvest by garlic by mid to late July when the leaves turn brown. And planted the cloves back sometime in early October.
But this year I have personal reason I wouldn’t be able to plant my garlic in October. I am just wondering can I plant my garlic in early September and will they be still OK?

I think that early September is pushing it a bit but you should be ok. What'll probably happen is that they will get established a bunch sooner and start putting out new growth before the ground freezes. You may be able to mulch this growth once winter sets in and save all of it but I'd expect that a least some of it will die if you really get a stretch of -10 weather. In spring, it might be a little slow since the growth will need to be replaced and you might need a touch more fertilizer to help the plants do this but all in all they are tough plants.

Or, you'll get an early winter with cold early on and the garlic will be just like normal ... either way I'd give it a shot.

Thank you for your info.
OK I will go ahead and plant them right after Labor day and see what happens next spring. -- thanks
