Harvest zone 4

I just dug up my first garlic for 2014.

This was a Creole that did real well for me last summer from a late spring planting. Not so good wintering over from last fall's planting, not up here in zone 4. Most of the cloves wintered but those that did come up this spring never did more than round out and pretty petite rounds at that. A couple of the cloves made small bulbs, but all the foliage was looking ratty and so out it came. A real good eating garlic it is, but apparently like the elephant garlics not one for me plant in the fall. It is on the curing racks now and I will see if it stores until next spring, once it cures.

Scapes are everywhere now even in the sand leeks and the feral I collected last summer. Only the Viet Namese Red lags behind the rest, and not by much. It is starting to look like some harvest by the 4th of July. Music is farthest along at this point. It is pretty nearly all scaped out now and ready for the haircut today or tomorrow.
