Are my onions ready to harvest?

First-time onion grower here. Planted these Maui sweet onions last fall. Most of the leaves are still green. They are in full sun (early morning until about 2PM) in clay soil. We planted a new apple tree nearby so I'd like to remove them soon so the apple tree roots won't be disturbed when removing the onions.

Do they look ready to harvest? It looks like I should have thinned out the smaller ones around the edges to allow the larger ones in the middle to grow.

Judging from the oic, I think, NOT YET. The stems are still standing upright. Therefore, the bulbs are still growing. When the stems collaps and the neck gets soft and seems to dryiny up, then there is no colaboration between the leaves and the roots.Then is the time to harves. My yellow ones have almost reached that stage right now. I am waiting for the ground to dry up (after a heavy rain) then I will harvest them. I have already harvested my Texas Sweets

Thank you. Should I continue watering, and should I remove the smaller ones around the outside to allow the inner ones to grow bigger?
