This Worm killing my onions - PIC

Posted by carawaykara 7WAcoast (My Page) on

I found this worm in what was left of the bulb of one of my onion plants that had keeled over. This is happening to quite a few of my plants. They are Candy onions planted from small plants about a month ago. Not all are affected but seems there are more every few days.

Can you identify this worm? Sorry pics are a bit blurry. It is a small worm less than an inch long.

Any help on identifying this worm or ideas to possible prevent further damage appreciated.

Thanks,
John

They look big for onion root maggots but this link might help: http://lawnandgarden.unl.edu/scripts/com_disease_insect.cgi?ID=1011285760

Are they possibly wireworms? Try the link below and see if they look like the right suspect.

Makalu,

Thank you, I believe wireworms are the culprit. Now that I think about, I believe I have seen these previously in the soil elsewhere. It seems there is not a whole lot I can do about it. Perhaps I can trap them somehow till the onions get bigger. I have some carrots sprouting now not too far from the onions. I hope they don't get dessimated as well. I read that wireworms like carrots as well.

I think I may give beneficial nematodes a try. They are a bit pricey though.

I am ordering some Nematodes from the site I have linked here. They are close and have the cheapest price for my small garden.

We'll see what happens.
