I have heard that occasionally some softneck varieties will get a scape the first year they are planted in a new area. I dont know if this is true or not, it hasn't happened to me, it is just what I have heard.

I have a soft neck variety that I know as Early Italian Purple that scapes consistently. I have grown this for 14 years and as long as it gets enough fertilizer and water it will scape.

Ended up planting the bulbils last fall and dug them up this year, looks like all rounds from the first cursory look, will look closer after they've cured and had the dirt brushed off of them.
