chesnok garlic

| I planted this garlic in the fall. by now I was expecting a flower, but the plants look like...well swans, theres a middle stalk that came up but bent over with a swelled part at the end. Is this what it should look like?
This was taken over a week ago. I havent watered them in oh almost a month. We have had some rain this past week though.

| That is exactly what hardneck garlic does. Garlic doesn't make seed, it makes little bulbils. You're doing just fine. |

| The curlique stalks are called garlic scapes, and they're edible. When they make one curlique, cut them off near where they join the plant. They have a mild garlic flavor. I've been eating mine for a week. I cut them like scallions or string beans and steam them with some carrots or broccoli. Tasty, and full of all sorts of phytonutrients, too, I'm sure. From what I understand, cutting off the garlic scapes helps the plant focus all its energy on the bulb rather than the stalk. |
