No scapes: I don't know what my garlic is doing.

I waited too late to order garlic last fall, so I planted cloves from a head from Whole Foods, so I really have no idea what I planted. Scapes never developed, just the green leaves. Does that mean it is not a hard neck variety? Do I still harvest when half of the leaves are brown?

Most store varieties are soft necks.

Hum... de ...de... I have no clue, but come this fall. Buy yourself some from one of the garlic suppliers online and you'll have success like you can't imagine. My personal advice is NOT to try and use grocery store garlic. Just spend the few extra bucks and you'll have a bucket load next summer. Just be sure and plant as directed for your area. In Indiana, we put them in the ground around October, lots of mulch!!!!!!!!

are the plants small? my experience is that soft necks (no scape) are much smaller than hard necks (have a scape).

buy your garlic at a farmers market garlic festival or heath food store that has locally grown garlic. it is much much cheaper than mail order.
