Pick greens -- and still harvest bulbs?

I wondered if one can pick some of the green onions on a growing bulb -- and still be able to harvest the bulbs later. Or is it one or the other?

I am using the square foot spacing method -- 3"apart in every direction -- so that perhaps I would be advised to pick green onions from every other plant, while keeping the rest to grow bulbs.
