Trimming Roots

I just dug half my garlic, the softnecks from the northern bed. The hardnecks in the southern bed look like they are not far behind. Nice looking stuff so far this year. Just curious, when's the best time to trim the roots? Usually, I dig the bulbs, let them dry a day or two, and then brush the dirt off and trim the roots. Then I hang them in the shed until I need them.
