Leek vs Elephant Garlic

I am told that Elephant Garlic and Leeks are actually extremely close botanically, perhaps even subspecies of the same species. I have a large patch of both that I have allowed to grow, multiply, and self-seed, for more than five years. I rarely dig any of them, just let them go. When they are in bloom (and they are now), some of them have white blooms, others are pinkish. Is the color difference indicative of whether a particular plant is leek or elephant garlic?
