Leek vs Elephant Garlic

I am told that Elephant Garlic and Leeks are actually extremely close botanically, perhaps even subspecies of the same species. I have a large patch of both that I have allowed to grow, multiply, and self-seed, for more than five years. I rarely dig any of them, just let them go. When they are in bloom (and they are now), some of them have white blooms, others are pinkish. Is the color difference indicative of whether a particular plant is leek or elephant garlic?

Flower color isn't an indication. I let some leeks go to seed a few years ago and there were both white and pink blossoms.

Thanks Rodney, I guess I could try selecting for one color or the other, if I had the time.
