First timer w/onions: Help!

I bought a 6 pack Spanish onion seedlings at nursery, each of the 6 contained several scallion-like tops, and below in the soil part of each consisted of a mass of root-like growths. Not knowing any better, I planted each of the six growths on its own, spaced per the instruction. Were these "sets"? Should I have untangled the mass and planted each "root" separately? What should I do now? The six clumps look to be growing well. I cannot imagine more than one big Spanish onion (if any) materializing from each. Sorry for my ignorance...I hate to give up on em.Pls help!
