Just went out and found 5 more going to flower..

Nothing you can do to stop them from flowering except cut off the flower and use the bulb. Luckily onions are usable at almost any size. The onions that flower won't store well.

Did you use onion sets or onion plants when you planted? The reason I'm asking is that onion sets have a tendency to flower.

hmm bummer... I hope they dont all go.. Yeah I used sets. Wasnt sure where to get plants. Its difficult getting really good garden starts out here. I started almost everything else from seed this year because of that reason.

Onions are one of those plants that are best started from seed or bought and transplanted. You can buy plants from various sources and based on the reviews I've read here over the years, Dixondale Farms seems to be one of the best (I have never personally bought from them though).

If you use sets sometimes you might get a good harvest and sometimes you don't. It's a gamble. If you do a search on this forum you will find several discussions about the use of sets and their problems. Hopefully it's only those few plants of yours that flower and you get a good harvest.

That being said, I'm not completely against sets. If you want green onion sets are definitely the way to go.

I haven't had anymore try to bloom yet. And the weather is getting nicer again. So hoping that means I will actually get to make some onion braids this year! I have decided I am going to start next years onions by seed inside. I'd like to have better variety anyways..
