Early Spring Planting and then Harvest

I planted 3 onion sets (white, yellow, and red) and 1 garlic set in late April/early May. Will they be mature enough to harvest this year? How can I tell they're ready to harvest? I just checked on one of the yellow onions and it was still small, possibly good for shallots? As you can tell, I'm a newbie when it comes to growing onions/garlic.

For what it's worth, I planted a couple rows of garlic last March and harvested them a couple days ago. They were small, about the size of green onions. They were flavorful, but I really didn't get more than I planted.
