Just for fun I planted a sprouting onion last winter and it grew a lot of the green leaves and then bolted. It put up 5 ball shaped pods with loads of flowers on each one. I'm not interested in harvesting the seed or bulbs, but when the plant companies sell Allium bulbs/flowers, are they really just selling onions at high prices ?

On another note, I think a mass planting of onions would make a nice mid layer of a garden since they grew to about 3 feet tall.
