When to plant shallots in So Cal

Hi, What is the earliest I can plant shallots from seed in So Cal? Last year (my first attempt) I planted in Jan and they were still taking up space when I wanted to plant my spring garden. They did well but were not ready until early summer. Is October too early? We are still having reasonably warm weather then. Thanks

Onions are planted from seed in Oct, so it seems a good point to start with shallots. I don't think seed grown shallots have the problem with bolting that onions do when they're sown too early, so you may even be able to go earlier than that.
