I just a quick scan of my onions(yellow & red) Some of them look rather small. I planted them in soil I thought was rich in nutrients, I even sprinkled some compost a few times...perhaps not enouugh?? I ran the miracle grow over it once yet I dont seem to have large bulbs. Im in zone 5. Does the growth come later? What is the typical time frame to harvest in z5? Is it to late to fertilize? any recommendations?

You are on the right track. We did get a lot of rain this spring which helps, but they do need a lot of nutrition. If the tops are starting to dry, it's too late. If they still look green and growing, then it's not too late to fertilize. It's important to fertilize them often at the first when they're growing so fast, and keep them watered well.
