Onion questions.......

| I'm growing onions in northern Michigan, zone 5. I planted 80 red onion sets. 20 of them are going to set seeds. Why?
I know onions all depend on the amount of sun you get. Should the bulb be showing or should they be covered with dirt?
Any advice will be great.
If you tell me something I have not tried, I will do it.
Thanks

| I love planting the roots from actual onions and garlic from the grocery store and they work great. Right now I have the lower part of green onions growing very quickly and they have gone to seed which means that more plants will pop up unless you cut off the seeds and just use the green parts so the rest will grow again quickly. |

| Sharon, how long ago did you plant them, and what type of weather since planting? Onions are biennials and often think they are in their 2nd year and go to seed, ESPECIALLY with sets! If you had really cold weather since planting, this makes it even worse. Best to plant plants not sets. |

Hi korney19, The sets were planter in late May. The weather here has been rotten. Very few day above 70 and down in the 30's at night. This has not been much of a summer for us, and usually it is very short. When you say plants, do you mean starting seed in the early year? I thought you only did that for green onions.. What about putting down seed in the fall to overwinter in the ground? Sharon |

| Yep the 30's are low enough to make them think they are in their second year....especially if it dropped that low for a few evenings in a row. Better luck next year. Don't hill around the onion as it grows and starts to show. |
