Some simple garlic growing questions

Hi all,

I waited too long to order garlic from a good internet company last fall, so I just bought some from an organic health store and planted that. I've been reading about how we're supposed to cut the scapes off. I'm assuming scapes are flower stalks??? Mine never did grow scapes. The leaves started to turn brown, so I pulled them at the end of June. They were pretty small. Is it important to get scapes?

Garlic comes in two general types, softneck and hardneck. The softneck type does not send up scapes. Most commercial gralic in grocery stores is softneck. Yours must be too.

Iirc you are in CT or Maine? If you are zone 5 you are far enough north to grow hardnecks, unless you're down south and are zone 5 due to elevation. If you bought locally grown garlic at a health food store in your area (again not down south) then it should have been a hardneck.

No idea why you did not get scapes. Is there a local farmers market in your town? This is the best place to source garlic. The price will be reasonable and it is definitely acclimated for your area. Again if you are in a northern latitude you can use that garlic, so if you live in CT and have no farmers markets you could buy garlic in Vt or NH and still grow it without a problem.
