Onion Plants for fall planting 2013

Just heard from Dixondale that they are offering many varieties of onion plants for this fall. For my zone, the intermediates are Candy, Super Star and Red Candy. These will be available the first of November.

Dixondale said the most bolt resistant variety is the Red Candy.

They decided to trial fall sales of onion plants due to the requests of many customers who may or may not have High Tunnels.

My plans are to raise several plots in the high tunnel. One will be planted thru one mil black plastic, another without plastic. If temps drop to mid 20s, I will cover one plot with Agribon 19, another with Agribon 19 plus recycled 6 mil greenhouse cover and another with greenhouse cover alone. Covers will be supported with wire hoops.

Since low temperature tolerance is highly determined by vigor/carbohydrate stores, I will separate the smaller from larger plants while planting to observe survival-IF weather is frightful.

If I had a cold frame, that would be another experimental site.
