Territorial is based in the Pacific Northwest where winter may be 2 days in January. The person selling the potato onions obviously is experience in growing them in colder zones. I grew the yellow potato onions for a number of years. Even had some to trade a few years ago. Then lost all but a few one winter and the rest the following year. Definitely wasn't going to attempt battling a losing cause. Potato onions have long been the winter storage onion just for the South. Still are!

Thanks so much for your reply. I had never bothered to look and see where territorial seeds were located. I will store them until the spring.

HI, Jen, I live in central NY zone 5 I always plant my potato onions in fall they do better....or you could plant half in fall and half in spring and see which one is doing better, good luck..

By all means plant some this fall. I'm in about the same zone as you. The ones planted in the fall (before Thanksgiving) will grow into larger healthier bulbs and show less stress the following summer.

The downside is that some winters, frost heave can dislodge the bulbs and they may die - that's why we never plant all of them in the winter.
