onion issues

I'm trying my hand at onions after a flop crop 6 years ago. But the same thing that happened then is happening now- the sprouts come up, look good, then fall over, rot and die. Last time it was too much water that killed them... don't know what's wrong this time. I planted Cippolini, some leek, and a couple kinds of green onions. All of them are dead now. I started them outside in flats, moving them from sun to shade depending on what the weather was like. I've got other types to plant too but don't want to waster them if they're going to die as well. I'd like to go ahead and get some started for next year so I don't have to *buy* transplants and *buy* more in the store when those crap out too. I can bring inside if need be. It's too late to plant them out right now here anyway.
