Yes, it may be possible. I think that they would have needed a short dormant period. That is, dried and cured. If they were happy with that situation, all they'd need was water and they'd start off growing again. If not cured, it's possible that some would just sit there and rot. As an example, sometimes one can leave bulb onions in ground for up to a month or so after they have finished growing and barely a dry tail sticking out of the ground. If the soil is fairly dry during that time, they will still be good but no growth. If it rains a few times, they are apt to rot. So, Peggy, if they were cured, you've got a chance of green onions yet this fall.

I've seen something else this year to get fall scallions. Two gardeners planted onion seed in very late May. One had no clue as to what she was doing other than that the seeds and ground were available. The other one planted 2 or 3 rows of sets in one plot and seeds in another. At the time, I shook my head and said that he was at least 3 months late in planting them. Nope, he'd stumbled onto it last year as well and had endless scallions for 3 months. That's what both of them have right now with everything about 15" tall.

That's very interesting. They were properly cured. I'll let you know how it turns out. Last summer I left some of my smaller onions in the ground to winter over. This spring they made quite a display when they flowered. They really stood out in the garden when there wasn't much else growing. They seem to attract lots of beneficials as well. Hopefully these will also flower next year.
