I don't believe you will get any bulbing at all by late fall. The days are shortening too fast. Perhaps they are scallions? Anyhow, scallions is what you'll have in a couple months.

The only variety I know of that can be fall-planted and overwinter in the colder zones, to make bulbs in early summer, is Walla-Walla. Which reminds me, I wanted to try that this fall.

Here's the latest info. from our local Master Gardener and a long time onion grower in our Community Gardens...
He tells me that the onions will overwinter here and will produce nice bulbs earlier than the ones I plant in spring. I don't know the variety I have, but there are yellows and whites both. I'll leave them in and see what happens. We are officially in zone 7, but grow things that aren't supposed to be able to grow here. We're supposed to dig up dahlia and canna bulbs for the winter, but I leave mine in the ground and they do just fine. Perhaps the zones are changing due to global warming or something?? Any way, if they don't survive, it's no great loss as I didn't expect to be growing onions now anyway. It will be a learning experience for me. Thanks for your input!!
