If garlic is cooked none of it makes your breath smell.

It wasn't elephant garlic...it was a new variety bred for this specific purpose...I believe it had a low sulphur content or something like that.

I have posted this on other forums too and all the responses are the same (so far). Perhaps I was hallucinating. ;)

Well, maybe they have developed something like that but then it wont be real garlic. it will something like non alcoholic beer or wine. I would say ; Why bother !
But on that note, IMO, the elephant garlic is a better alternative.

BTW: Unlike onions, smell of garlic is not because of sulfur.

I've read on numerous sites that sulfur is the cause of the smell. If that's not it, what causes it? That will give me some new keywords to search. :)

I like decaf coffee and nonalcoholic beer. Just like those, if I like the taste and don't have to deal with the side effects, then great!

Source of onions smell is some kind of Sulfur oxide, which is gas and not stable. So the smell of onion is directly related to sulfur. As, we know sulfur oxides are disinfectant and kill certain germs/bacteria. That is why chewing some onion (and keeping it in mouth) kills the germs that cause bad breath.

But it is different in garlic. Although there is "sulfur" in the compound that causes smell in garlic but it works differently.
Opposite of onion that kills germs, garlic gives them more life and in turn they produce the smell (as gas). The same compound lingers on, gets into lungs, into blood stream and come up through skin.
Probably, this is the whole bacterial farming garlic that is beneficial.
