Shallots: seeds or bulbs

Posted by novelist 5A (My Page) on

I have a very successful herb garden, but this fall I'm branching out to alliums. I have 15 varieties of garlic coming and I'm pretty set on how to plant it. I've gotten a lot of useful info reading here.

Now, I am confused on shallots, though. Should I used seeds or bulbs? I can get shallots at the local food co-op, but they have only two cloves each. It doesn't seem all the efficient. I've seen seeds a Johnny's, but not bulbs.

What should I get? If I get seeds, do I plant them in the fall.

RE: Shallots: seeds or bulbs

I have never tried seeds, only bulbs, but I, personally, would stick with bulbs for the time being.

I grow French Red shallots. When you plant shallots they divide, like multiplying onions. So the one shallot bulb that you plant divides into around 7 as it grows. The two sectioned bulb that you bought is only part of the larger plant that grew from the original.

A lot of people do grow them from seed, but I am happy with tricking to the bulbs for now.
