| I don't believe anyone has commented on a similar experience since I posted this in September. The Prisma hybrid shallot bulbs, grown from seed in 'o8, were replanted this year. They have grown nicely . . . but they almost don't look like shallots this time around. Of course, the plants started out fairly large as the bulb began to grow. My French Gray are growing from bulbs, as usual. Almost as soon as they began to grow, they divided. The Prisma have divided also but usually only into 2 & 4 bulbs. And, the plants look more like onions than shallots! One plant will flower soon. I suppose that since they are hybrids, saving the seed wouldn't make much sense. I'm pleased, of course, that the other plants are busy dividing and growing bulbs and not flowering! I'll update this thread when I harvest in July but want others who have grown shallots from seed and then replanted the bulbs the following year to be able to recount their experiences. For me, so far, so good . . . Steve |
