Shallots from Seed - replant as sets?

Posted by digit Z6a (My Page) on

I grew shallots from seed this year for the first time. They were a success!

I've grown shallots for many years. I think I got the sets originally from Jungs - French Gray. These new ones are Prisma.

There aren't a heckuva lot of them even tho' they are nice bulbs. I was planning to replant them with the French Gray next year but then I got to wondering - will they just bolt to seed?!?

My French Gray shallots have never flowered. If these Prismas go to seed, are they wasted? They are a hybrid so might not produce bulbs as nice as these.

Have you used your shallots from seed for replanting and what was the result?

Steve

I don't think my Shallots went to seed, they just multiplied at the bottom, plus I kept picking the greens since they were right outisde the door. I only have one year Shallot experience.

I dunno, but the ones I started from seed early this spring, set out in April, and let dry out in Aug the garden were dividing nicely. But just in two.

I don't believe anyone has commented on a similar experience since I posted this in September.

The Prisma hybrid shallot bulbs, grown from seed in 'o8, were replanted this year. They have grown nicely . . . but they almost don't look like shallots this time around.

Of course, the plants started out fairly large as the bulb began to grow. My French Gray are growing from bulbs, as usual. Almost as soon as they began to grow, they divided.

The Prisma have divided also but usually only into 2 & 4 bulbs. And, the plants look more like onions than shallots!

One plant will flower soon. I suppose that since they are hybrids, saving the seed wouldn't make much sense. I'm pleased, of course, that the other plants are busy dividing and growing bulbs and not flowering!

I'll update this thread when I harvest in July but want others who have grown shallots from seed and then replanted the bulbs the following year to be able to recount their experiences.

For me, so far, so good . . .

Steve

I have never saved shallot seed. I have been growing my shallots from save sets, and don't know the type that I'm growing. I have noticed that three or four have flowers and wanted to save the seed and try them out, any seed saving suggetions?
Shallots (I'm growing to try to save seed from the few pods that developed!)

Shallot trials, going to let them sit another week or two . . .
