Experimenting--Garlic on a Sandwich

I had my first experiment tonight trying to find out a way to use garlic on a sandwich. I cut 2 cloves in two. Put butter in a small dish. Coves put in. Put in micro oven for 1.5 minutes. I was hoping to get the cloves soft enough to spread on homemade 8 grain toast and add other things.
Garlic didn't get soft for spreading, but dried somewhat. One even got real dry similar in consistency of a potato chip.
I have plenty of garlic to try and I though I would just throw it away and try something else another time. I tried the one that was real dry. Nice taste. I put the pieces on top of the slice of sweet onion slice, which had some chipped ham under it.
I ate them as I ate the sandwich. None of the pieces were tough and blended in well with the sandwich. A little crunch in each of the three not completely dry.
Does anybody know of a way to utilize the microwave to get garlic cloves soft for spreading? Would it help to chop the garlic and putting a lot of butter in the dish? Thanks. Geezer
