they should work well together. The garlic will want lots of fertility while the legumes don't require much.

You will probably do better if you avoid synthetic ferts in such an arrangement to get the best productivity from the beans and peas as they may end up over fertilized by the amount you would give the garlic.

Simply amend the soil with compost, manure and any other organic matter prior to planting and then topdress with the same and everything should be good. When you harvest the legumes for the final picking cut the plants off above ground rather than pulling them out. This releases nitrogen into the soil from the roots (peas and beans take nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots).

In short, fertilize organically to avoid over fertilizing the legumes and leave the legume roots in the soil when they are done to return nitrogen to the soil.

It's not advised to plant things in the onion/garlic family near anything in the bean family as they aren't considered good companions. I'm not sure I remember all the details as I heard this over 10 years ago, but I believe items in one of the groups can send out something that will stunt the other. Therefore, I never plant beans or peas near my garlic. I've only grown onions a couple of times, so don't have to keep them in mind. I usually plant my garlic in a couple of long rows at the far end or far side of one of my gardens out of the way. I use the square foot method so the bulbs are fairly close together. I plant things near it which will expand as the summer progresses and the garlic is picked such as peppers, cucumbers or tomatoes.
