leeks- seed saving

I am leaving some leeks in the ground so I can collect the seed next year. I was going to leave the largest ones till I saw they already have the seed pods on them. Is there a reason I shouldn't keep them for seed propogation. Or should I go for the smaller ones with no seed pod. What I am thinking is the existing seed pods may rot in our Idaho winter weather.

Any ideas on this?
