The past two years I grew Shvelisi (Chesnok Red) and Tochliavri (Red Toch). Last year I also grew Khabar
Creole, Brown Tempest, Metechi, Music, and Killarney Red. I can not comment on the latter group for certain as I am not 100 % certain of the varieties (http://www.wam.umd.edu/~gdouglas/garlic/mystery.html).

In my limited experience growing garlic (4 years) the softnecks have given me the largest heads. I much prefer the taste of the hardnecks though and continue to grow them even though generally head size seems to be shrink when they are planted in my garden. This will be my third year with Shvelisi and I will be interested to see if its head size continues to shrink as I really enjoy that variety.

My experience with Rocambole, hardnecks is that they produce decent size heads of garlic, but last a very short period of time. Not sure if this has anything to do with growing conditions. This may be me improperly curing the heads or improperly storing them, but they only seem to last about a month for me no matter what I try while all my other varieties, even the other types of hardnecks, last until the next harvest. Note: I do consume all the hardnecks first so most are gone well before the next harvest.

One hardneck, purple stripe (#3 on the web page) produced very large garlic heads, in fact I would guess that the heads were larger than the head I planted. (I am not obsessed enough YET to weigh and measure before planting, this probably is inevitable though). It may just be a matter of finding the correct hardneck to grow in MD.

Every variety I have tried except for Creole types have produced garlic for many delicious meals. I have tried Creole types twice and both times the resulting cloves where barely large enough to use and the skin colors changed from beautiful dark red to boring white with purple blush.
